This Read Me file accompanies the Kingston PCI Fast Ethernet installer disk. The Kingston EtheRx PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter is a 100BaseTX-compatible Ethernet adapter for use on PCI Power Macintosh systems.
Note: This product is designed for use with Open Transport 1.0.8 or later. Kingston suggests that user should install the latest Open Transport for the System Software that is recommended by Apple. For shipping releases of System Software, Open Transport 1.1.2 is the latest officially sanctioned release for use on System Software 7.6.1 and earlier. Beginning with Open Transport 1.2, Apple provided the Open Transport Installer as part of the System Software Installer (or Update). This driver has been tested with System Software 8.x and System Software 9.0.
Kingston PCI Fast Ethernet
This is the Open Transport driver for the Kingston EtheRx PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter. The installer places this in your Extensions folder. To activate the driver for use on an AppleTalk network once it has been installed, open the AppleTalk control panel, select the Ethernet connection for the appropriate slot, and close the control panel.
Note: The file "Kingston PCI Fast Ethernet (AB)" is also placed in your Extensions folder during installation. This is the Open Transport driver for the early version of the Kingston EtheRx PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter with the DEC 21140-AB PCI controller chip.
Change in this version
• Resolved a TCP/IP problem of driver version 3.2 with System Software 9.0 which is originated from a problem with Apple's Enet driver template.
Kingston EtheRx PCI Diagnostics
This is the diagnostic program for use with the Kingston EtheRx PCI 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter. The installer places this application in the Kingston PCI Fast Ethernet folder.
Kingston EtheRx PCI Diagnostics can run with or without an active network connection through the Kingston PCI Fast Ethernet driver. When running with an active driver, no diagnostic tests can be performed, but packet and error statistics are still collected.
To perform diagnostic tests on the adapter hardware, open the AppleTalk control panel, select "Printer Port" for the connection, and close the control panel. This allows the diagnostic tests to be performed without interfering with the operation of the driver.
Note: If other network types (such as TCP/IP) are connected via the Kingston PCI Ethernet driver, they too must changed to make the adapter available for testing.
This diagnostic application add a "Preferences" option for logging driver events and for forcing link configuration to a user specified duplex mode and speed.
Important:
Do not use mis-matched versions of the Kingston EtheRx PCI Diagnostics and the Kingston PCI Ethernet driver; always use the version of the diagnostic application that was installed with the driver.
Installation Guide
NetWare Server Access:
NetWare 3.12: Requires "NetWare for Macintosh DOS Disk" or NW_MAC
• Start your NetWare server as normal.
• From the server console execute the following command :LOAD INSTALL
• Under "Installation Options" select "Product Options".
• Under "Currently Installed Products" press INS key to add a product.
• Insert your NW_MAC diskette into the drive and press RETURN.

NetWare 4.x: If you installed NetWare using CD-ROM, you need to have the
CD-ROM setup preferrably the same way.
You will need the NetWare CD ready for installation.
• Start your NetWare server as normal.
• From the server console, execute the command :LOAD INSTALL
• From "Installation Options" high-light "Product Options" and press RETURN.
• Highlight "Install NetWare for Macintosh" and press RETURN.
• NetWare will prompt you for the NetWare CD or diskettes.
• Follow on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Note: Ethernet_SNAP frame needs to be loaded and binded to APPLETLK protocol.
• Shutdown and restart server.
NetWare client for MAC setup: Need "NetWare for Macintosh Client" v1.0 or later.
Prefer loading after the server is ready to allow
APPLETLK to automatically learn its network
and zone configuration (if not, a quick reload will
help).
• Insert "Netware for Macintosh Client diskette into your MAC.
• Under "NW for Macintosh Client" folder, double click on "Installer"
• Restart your MAC when done.
• To verify and make connections run "CHOOSER" under "Apple Menu Items"
Windows NT Server Access:
Windows NT 3.50, 3.51 and NT 4.0 Advanced Servers:
• Open "Control Panel" and double click on "Network" icon.
Under "Add Network Software", choose "Services for Macintosh" then
click Continue.
• Windows will ask for several NT Setup diskettes or the Setup CD.
Back to "Network Settings" click on OK to conclude network setup.
• Windows NT will start setting up AppleTalk protocol, enter all neccesary
information for AppleTalk protocol configuration. Windows NT will setup
a separate folder (or directory) called "Microsoft UAM Volume" under
the root for AppleTalk sharing.
• Restart Windows NT.
MAC Client Setup: needs Open Transport v1.0.8 or later
• Insert Kingston Installer disk and run Installer.
• Restart your MAC.
• Open Control Panel and run AppleTalk.
• Under "Connection via:" select "Ethernet Slot nn" where nn is the expansion slot
which the KNE100TX adapter resides. Close and save your settings.
• To verify and make connection, run CHOOSER under Apple Menu Items.
Click on AppleShare should reveal the NT server's presence.
